Laxminarayan Ramdas was born, into a Tamil Brahmin family and raised in Matunga, Mumbai. He attended the Cambridge School Srinivaspuri in Delhi. After completing his Senior Cambridge examinations, Ramdas joined the inaugural course of the Joint Services Wing (JSW) in Dehradun in January 1949.
