Harivansh Rai Bachchan, born into a Hindu family in Babupatti, United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, British India, on November 27, 1907, initially bore the surname Srivastava. He adopted the pen name "Bachchan" (meaning child) for his Hindi poetry. Bachchan's scholarly pursuits led him to teach in the English Department at Allahabad University from 1941 to 1957. Later, he pursued a PhD on W. B. Yeats at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, spending two years there.
